Preserve crew art

Published: October 22, 2009

In a recent Tribune article concerning the "restriction" of the river's crew art, Riverwalk development manager Lee Hoffman, whose distaste for the display is apparent, asks how we want to present our city to the public. He misses the mark if he believes that a sterile, run-of-the-mill riverfront will charm the masses. In the end, it is the human element that breathes life into a city.

These collegiate calling cards are a perfect example of this. They are not public nuisances to be whitewashed over, but are unique treasures to be celebrated!

These colorful walls are a rare example of Tampa's character. They speak more clearly to who we are than any pristine museum or commissioned work of art ever could.

When Riverwalk visitors learn about this endearing tradition, they will not see a marred view of the river, but a city with a story to tell.
