ST. PETERSBURG - A suspicious house fire broke out this morning, though no one was home when firefighters arrived to put it out, officials say.
The blaze at the small house at 8110 Diagonal Road N. was reported at about 7:30 a.m., said Lt. Joel Granata of St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue.
Firefighters forced their way through a sliding glass door and found the fire had started in a bedroom, Granata said. The fire was brought under control in about five minutes.
Though the fire was confined to the bedroom, there was smoke damage throughout the house, Granata said.
The property, which is 832 square feet, has a current fair market value of $109,000. The damage was estimated at roughly $3,000.
Investigators are trying to determine the cause, though they have already concluded it appears to be suspicious.
