TAMPA - Delayed a week by torrential rains, the Tampa Downtown Market opened today at Franklin and Madison streets with more vendors, a bigger variety of food and fresh produce and more space for shoppers to roam.

It is the second year for the Friday market, which features 55 vendors, up from last year's 38. It also is the second year in a row that the market was rained out on its opening week.

Operations manager Tiffany Ferrecchia said that it took longer than planned to set up the market today adjacent to Lykes Gaslight Park and north on Franklin Street, but that the kinks were being worked out.

"If we were all crammed on Franklin Street like last year, it would look packed," Ferrecchia said. "This year, people have a lot more room to move around."

Back for a second year are such vendors as Lutz Nutz, La Petite France creperie and Pappardelle's fresh pasta. Newcomers include The Cupcake Spot, Bay Coffee & Tea Co., The Dancing Goat raw milk and goat cheese provider and Grandma Grace's Goodies, which sells tomato jam as well as other spreads.

The market will operate from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Friday through the middle of May.
