Cheer on those walking to beat breast cancer

Published: October 24, 2009

In October, it's nearly impossible to count the number of ways you can show your support for breast cancer research: buy a pink combination lock; get fitted for a new bra; save the pink lids from your lunchtime yogurt.

Or you can stop by one of seven designated cheering stations for the 2009 Tampa Bay Breast Cancer 3-Day walk Oct. 30 to Nov. 1 and support the estimated 1,500 participants raising money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund.

Men and women, including breast cancer survivors, will be logging 60 miles during the fifth annual three-day event, which this year travels between Clearwater's Sand Key Park and downtown St. Petersburg. Nearly 80 percent of the participants in the walk are from the Tampa Bay area.

Each person who signs up for the 3-Day commits to raising a certain amount of money, which on average is about $3,000, says the walk Web site. An estimated $20 million has been raised in Tampa Bay the last five years.

Money raised goes to support programs doing breast cancer research, education and community health. In 2008, 72 percent of the money raised went to such groups, according to the group's annual 3-Day report card.

Larger celebrations have been planned for Friday's opening and Sunday's closing ceremonies
