ST. PETERSBURG - The only eighth-grader on the Admiral Farragut varsity squad, running back Cortavius Givins, scored two of the BlueJackets' four touchdowns before a home crowd to shut out Cambridge and clinch a playoff spot.
The win put the BlueJackets at 6-1 on the season, while the Lancers fell to 3-4.
BlueJackets quarterback Josh Burch threw for only 22 yards, but his team rushed for 377 yards, 148 by Toddrick Macon and 91 by Givins.
It was Givins' second week back after being out for a month with a broken wrist, and he said that despite cramping during the Cambridge game, he felt good on the field.
"One of my touchdowns was for a friend of my coach who died," Givens said, adding that the game's Senior Night theme was his opportunity to dedicate the other touchdown to senior teammate Burch.
Throughout the game, the Lancers alternated quarterbacks Michael McDermott and Hayden Kelly, who combined for 73 yards passing and 178 yards rushing, but the BlueJackets' defense held them to eight first downs.
Givins recovered his own fumble on a 19-yard run to score the first touchdown with 29 seconds left in the first quarter, and the BlueJackets were ahead 7-0 at the half.
