TARPON SPRINGS - Continuing its dominance in Class 4A-District 6, host Tarpon Springs (6-2, 3-0) racked up 300 yards rushing and recorded seven sacks in the easy win.
With leading rusher Adrian "Bubba" Golden relegated to defense due to what Spongers coach George Kotis said was a hip injury, junior Darius Daniels had 185 rushing yards, including scoring runs of 50 and 84 yards, on 13 carries. LaDarius Only added 70 yards and a score and linebacker Dillon Goodell had three sacks.
The Bulls (4-3, 1-1) had minus-10 yards rushing thanks to the sacks. Their only score was on a 9-yard pass from James Tringali to Assad Nevel on their second drive to tie the game in the first quarter.
Wiregrass did have chances in the second quarter to keep it close. His team down 21-7, Blake Burch returned a kickoff 85 yards to the 13, but penalties pushed it out of field-goal range. Then, after recovering a Tarpon Springs fumble 2 yards from the end zone, Tringali was sacked for a safety.
The Bulls fell to third in the district after Hudson's win against Ridgewood but remain in the playoff hunt. Tarpon Springs and Hudson play next week, and the Spongers would clinch the title with a win.
