WESLEY CHAPEL - It took overtime and an impressive stop, but Zephyrhills was able to grab its first win of the season 14-7 against district rival Wesley Chapel.
"This was a hard-fought game," Bulldogs coach Troy Hochstetler said. "(In overtime and) when it was fourth-and-whatever, we knew we had to go for it. We had to go all out and had to get that win."
Zephyrhills (1-6, 1-4 Class 3A-District 7) took the ball first, and on fourth-and-1, sophomore QB Jamal Roberts, who had 64 yards rushing, scored on the QB keeper. The Bulldogs stopped the Wildcats (2-6, 1-4) on fourth down when Davon Henry was hit hard and dropped a pass from Keegan Tanner.
Zephyrhills scored first on a fake punt when fullback Alex Paniagua threw a quick pass to Adrian Sanchez for the 34-yard touchdown. For the next 36 minutes, the two teams traded possessions and missed field goal attempts, while Wesley Chapel running back Jon Mahan carried the bulk of the Wildcats' offense with 110 yards on 30 carries.
The Wildcats tied the game with less than six minutes left on a 1-yard keeper by Tanner, and had a chance to win the game, but kicker Terrence Campbell missed a last-second 44-yard field goal try.
