BRADENTON - A Bradenton man died this afternoon after he was struck by a car as he approached a driver of another vehicle who had just been in a single-car accident, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
George Jepsen, 49, died at the scene of the 12:45 p.m. accident on northbound Interstate 75.
FHP said Matthew Young of Madeira Beach was driving north in a Chevrolet sport utility vehicle when he lost control of his car. His vehicle rotated counterclockwise and overturned several times.
Young's car came to rest facing northwest in the northbound left and center lanes, FHP said.
Shortly after, Cherie Cullers, of Bradenton, drove her car into Young's car, FHP said. Cullers was driving and Jepsen was the passenger in her car.
After the accident, Cullers, 42, and Jepsen walked to the inside shoulder of I-75 to meet with Young, who was in his vehicle.
A third car driven by Darien Grable, 29, of Sarasota, was heading north on I-75. When Grable approached the accident scene, he didn't reduce his speed. He veered left to avoid the accident and drove to the inside shoulder striking Jepsen who was standing at the scene, FHP said.
Charges are pending in the case, FHP said.
Young was taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital with serious injuries. Everyone else involved suffered minor injuries, FHP said.
