NEWSOME'S POWERS WON'T RETURN

If Newsome's football team is going to make a run at a second consecutive trip to the state playoffs, the Wolves are going to have to do so without the services of Conner Powers.

Newsome's standout junior fullback won't return this season because of a knee injury suffered during an Oct. 16 win vs. Leto, his father, Scott Powers, said Saturday.

Conner Powers was injured while being tackled during the first half of the Wolves' victory vs. Leto. He underwent an MRI on Wednesday and the results were examined by a specialist Friday. Scott Powers said his son was diagnosed with a Grade II tear of the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Doctors recommended he not return to the field this season.

"All in all, he's fine. He's good with it," Scott Powers said. "He's handling it really well. Basically we know he's going to be fine for next year."

Powers entered this season with more than 2,000 career rushing yards to his credit. He ranked among Hillsborough County's leading rushers with 616 rushing yards and eight touchdowns prior to being injured. He sat out Newsome's victory Friday vs. Bloomingdale.

Scott Powers said his son will begin rehab next week. After a one-month period, doctors will again evaluate Powers' knee and decide if surgery is necessary. If Powers must undergo surgery, he would be out for six months. If he responds well to the rehab, Scott Powers said his son could end up playing this spring for the Wolves' baseball team.

Newsome, which has won four consecutive games, has key district games against Riverview and Durant the next two weeks.

3

Consecutive shutouts by the Plant City defense. That mark is tied with Spoto, which shut out three consecutive opponents between Weeks 3-5, for the longest streak in Hillsborough County this season.

6

Consecutive games in which Hillsborough receiver Charles Lovett has had a reception of at least 50 yards, though his streak of five consecutive games with a touchdown reception was snapped in Friday's loss to Armwood.

7

100-yard rushing performances this season for Sickles junior Cary White and Plant City sophomore Dazmond Patterson, tops in Hillsborough County. White and Patterson rank 1 and 2, respectively, among the county's rushing leaders this season.

PLAYOFF WATCH

Sickles was the lone Hillsborough County team to wrap up a playoff berth Friday night, but three other teams control their own fate this week and can earn postseason berths - and possibly a bit more - with a victory.

Robinson can earn its first playoff berth since 2005 and first district title since 1977 with a win vs. first-year program Steinbrenner.

Jefferson can wrap up its first district title since 2004 with a win vs. winless Dixie Hollins. A Dragons win also would give the program its 11th consecutive trip to the postseason, extending the longest current streak by a county team.

And Durant can secure its second consecutive trip to the postseason with a win vs. neighborhood rival Plant City. A Cougars win vs. the Raiders also will set up a showdown for the district title the following week against Newsome. Durant hasn't won a district title since 2003.

Also, Tampa Catholic and Newsome can clinch postseason berths with wins and help. Tampa Catholic needs Avon Park to lose to Orlando Lake Highland Prep and Newsome needs Plant City to lose to Durant.
