Homes for homeless

I am amazed at how generous Hillsborough County is to the homeless who camp here. It makes me all warm and fuzzy to see a person pushing a stolen grocery cart, littering and jay-walking all over this town and not one police officer ever gives a single ticket.

I have a solution. With all of the empty homes, why not get our government to pay the owners a rental fee for allowing homeless people to stay in these homes on a month-to-month basis?

Education is key

I believe alcohol is still the most abused substance and has caused more deaths than prescription drugs, which are "legalized" because the industry is big, very profitable and people need medications. But where should the line be drawn about over-the-counter drugs that have killed people who haven't followed the recommended directions or have created new ways of making another "meth or rave" drug? There is more than enough information on drug abuse and effects on the Internet and in books, and it should be taught in school by people who really have the facts.

Giving is better

My daughter hosted her 8th birthday party and in lieu of gifts raised $600 for charity, which was nearly matched with $500 by our family company. Proceeds were split between the Pediatric Cancer Foundation in Tampa and the Pet Pal Animal Shelter in St. Petersburg. Just imagine what could happen if more kids and parents around the world put similar ideas to work. It was the best gift she ever received and gave.

We visited both charities, and they gave her such a warm thank you she said, "This is the best day of my life." I would love it if this idea encouraged others that there are greater gifts than those from the toy store.
