TAMPA - For the first time in 10 years, the Academy of the Holy Names has qualified for the state golf tournament, and the Jaguars pulled it off with one of the youngest teams in school history.
With three eighth-graders, a ninth-grader and one senior, Holy Names fired 361 at the Eagles Golf Club, 24 shots ahead of third-place Steinbrenner in Monday's Class 1A-Region 5 girls tournament.
The Jags finished 48 shots behind winner Northside Christian's 313, but it was still good enough to advance in the state's qualification format, which takes the top two teams.
Steinbrenner's Alex Milan qualified as an individual, firing a 74, three shots behind winner Northside Christian's A.J. Newell.
"I hit the ball well off the tee, but I didn't putt so well (32 putts)," Milan said. "I'm just happy I get another chance to play at state."
"To have this team be as young as they are and to be playing as well as they are, is very exciting," said Holy Names coach Chris Kumka.
