TAMPA - On a day that included controversial disqualifications of two of the area's top boys players, several lights still shined brightly at the Class 1A-Region 5 tournament.
The brightest light came from Calvary Christian sophomore Lee McCoy, who fired a 4-under-par 68 at the Eagles Golf Club, good for a one-shot win over teammate Aaron Watson.
Calvary's day wasn't totally rosy, however, because its other top player, Taylor Hancock, was disqualified for allegedly using foul language, a ruling Calvary school officials said they will appeal to the Florida High School Athletic Association. The hope is Calvary will get Hancock back in time for next week's state tournament.
Monday, even without Hancock, Calvary won with a 306, 20 strokes ahead of Northside Christian. Jesuit was third at 329, followed by Steinbrenner (330), Clearwater Central Catholic (338) and Berkeley Prep (351).
Berkeley Prep's No. 1, Blake Morris, was disqualified for allegedly hitting his golf bag with a club, an allegation McCoy said was, "Completely not true."
