Wharton's Demick wins; Riverview falls short
RIVERVIEW - Wharton's Paul Demick wasn't happy after his 87 in Tuesday's Class 2A-District 11 tournament. Windy conditions played havoc with most of the scores that day and Demick finished in a three-way tie for 10th place at Summerfield Crossings, but Wharton qualified for region as a team with a runner-up district finish.
So when Demick saw calm winds at the same course for Monday's 2A-Region 4 tournament, he said he relaxed and focused on his game.
"I played every shot," Demick said. "I just remembered don't worry about the other players, don't worry about conditions, just play my game."
And his game led the way, as the junior shot a 1-under 70 to win the region crown and advance to state as an individual, finishing three strokes ahead of Ridgewood's Austin Padova, who also qualified for state.
East Lake took the team title for the third straight year, shooting 313. After being tied at 315 through 18 holes, Palm Harbor took a two-hole playoff against Riverview to earn the other team qualifying spot.
