LAKE MARY - For the second consecutive year, Wiregrass Ranch advanced to the region tournament. But this year, the Bulls were playing with the big schools. As the 4-year-old school continues to increase in enrollment, Wiregrass athletics have moved up in classification.
Monday at Magnolia Plantation Golf Club, the Bulls shot the same 337 they shot in the district last week and finished eighth in the nine-team Class 2A-Region 2 tournament.
"Being the first year in 2A, the teams are in a whole different class," said Wiregrass coach Nick Cuviello. "Hopefully, the kids saw that and it will elevate their game for next year."
Wiregrass Ranch medalist Dylan Larson posted a 39-37-76 on the 6,587-yard, par-72 course and was in contention to advance to next week's state tournament until Orange Park Fleming Island's Joshua Lee carded a 74 in the final group of the day to knock all the 76s out.
Among the nine individuals whom advanced from district were Donald Eubanks of Sunlake (41-41-82) and Shane Murphy of Springstead (40-48-88).
