Helping the homeless

Not everyone living near Floriland Mall was against the housing there of Tampa's homeless. I, for example, who live within walking distance of that mall, would have welcomed them to my neighborhood with open arms. What a wonderful opportunity it would have been for those of us who are more fortunate to volunteer with and help those who temporarily are not able to help themselves.

Many of the good people I know were equally excited about integrating the homeless into our area, where good bus transportation and reasonable shopping would also be available for them. While my area's Crime Watch leader was screaming to the press about safety issues, I was simultaneously contacting the county commission expressing my enthusiasm for the idea. Of course, if the Floriland Mall owners will not have it, we must look elsewhere, which I have been doing as I ride about the city.

There are several businesses closed down and also vacant spaces in some strip malls. An out-of-business restaurant could also be ideal due to already having facilities for feeding large groups of people, were group meals to be part of the deal. Anyone who thinks that keeping our homeless on the streets cuts down on crime should sleep under a bridge for a night or two and get a taste of what homelessness would feel like. We must do something now to help our fellow human beings, many of whom were previously gainfully employed and even in the military.

There is a chill in the air as colder weather sets in, so it is time to warm up our hearts and do something. I care so deeply about this problem and find it unconceivable that there are people so callous that they do not.
