DADE CITY - City Commissioner Steve Van Gorden announced Tuesday night he will resign his seat after the Nov. 10 commission meeting.

Van Gorden, who is serving his second term on the commission, said his decision was based on his family situation, job demands and his pending move out of the city limits.
Van Gorden confirmed he is going through a divorce and is moving to Zephyrhills to be closer to his children. "I need to get my family situation under control and be there for my two kids," he said.
Van Gorden was elected in 2004 and again in 2008. He told his colleagues it had been a blessing and honor to serve.

"I also want to take a moment to encourage my fellow commissioners that it is fine to have disagreements on this dais as long as it is done in a tasteful manner that benefits the residents and their quality of life," he said.
City Attorney Karla Owens said the remaining commissioners would need to appoint a successor to serve in Van Gorden's seat until the next city election in April.
