Land O' Lakes swims to titles

TAMPA - Obviously, water is a necessity for a swim meet. But water coming from the sky can play havoc on the end result.

This was the case Tuesday at the Class 2A-District 5 swimming championships at the New Tampa YMCA. A heavy rainstorm following the consolation finals of the boys 500 freestyle affected the electronic timing system, causing the final results to be delayed.

As a result, by the time the official results were computed by hand, everyone had left the meet.

"The last half hour is a blur," said Land O' Lakes girls coach Robin HiIgenberg. "Most of the time I don't know how we did until I get home and study the times. (Tuesday) I really don't know."

Land O' Lakes boys and girls teams won the team titles. The girls edged Lecanto 381-366 while the boys outscored Lecanto 397-323. The Gators will have 17 spots in the girls' competition at next week's region meet in Gainesville and 16 on then boys' side.

Zephyrhills' Lettie Clark (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle) and Land O' Lakes Alex Pierovich (200 individual medley) won two district titles while Mitchell's Devin McCaffrey (100 butterfly, 100 breaststroke), Gulf's Hunter Swartsel (100 freestyle, 100 backstroke) and Ridgewood's Joe Geschke (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle) were double-winners on the boys side.

In the Class 1A-District 3 meet at the Clermont Training Center, Bishop McLaughlin's Jemma Cropanese won two district titles (100 butterfly, 100 freestyle) and teammates Camille Baumrucker (50 freestyle) and Yvonne Baumrucker (100 breaststroke) will join her at region.

Pasco will have seven swimmers advancing to region, led by Norah Taylor (200 individual medley, 100 backstroke), Peter Mercadante (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle) and Tim Dombrowski (500 freestyle, 100 breaststroke).
