Opfer wins regional District 8 tournament

TRINITY - Durant sophomore Madison Opfer was frustrated with how she played during the regular season, and despite having the second-lowest round last week at the 5A-District 8 tournament, she knew she wasn't playing her best.

On Tuesday at the Class 2A-Region 4 tournament at Heritage Springs, things finally came together. Opfer won the region crown with a 4-under 67, making four birdies to win by four strokes.

"This has been a very odd season," Opfer said. "But I felt like I was able to show up today and show a 37 scoring average (for the season) isn't me."

"Today I played smart and kept my head in the game."

Mitchell took the team title, finishing with a 322 behind a 73 from Megan Van Etten and a 74 from Rebecca Van Etten. Opfer's 67, along with a 76 from Erika Wardzinski, helped Durant to a second-place finish and spot at the state tournament.

Qualifying individually for state was King's Kelsey Gibson and Dunedin's Justin Knox, who tied for second with scores of 71.

Bulldogs senior improves on score

Sarah Baniszewski will take the improved score.

Though she came in ninth at the 2A-Region 2 tournament at the par-72 Magnolia Plantation Golf Course on Tuesday, the Zephyrhills senior and the only Pasco County representative shot an 88, which was two strokes better than her 90 at districts last week.

"This was a much tougher course (than at districts)," Bulldogs coach Ken Burgess said, referring to his team's home course of Silverado. "It was windy, and then the scores were down across the board, but she did a real good job today."

Lake Mary finished with 323 and Fleming Island finished with 287, and both will move on to state.

Baniszewski was 16-over-par at the regional, but she was the only golfer from her district to improve her score. Ocala Lake Weir junior Heather Proctor, who shot a 5-under 66 last week, struggled to a 77.
