CLEARWATER - Traffic at St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport rose 196 percent in September, compared with a year ago, to 27,337 passengers.
That was after a 20 percent gain in August, compared with August 2008, to 59,040.
September is the slowest month for the Pinellas airport because carriers, in particular Allegiant Air, have become adept at scheduling seasonal service to match demand.
Allegiant Air is scheduled to inaugurate service between the Pinellas County airport and Bangor, Maine, on Nov. 20, and USA 3000 will resume service to Chicago's O'Hare International Airport on Dec. 17.
CanJet will resume service to Halifax, Nova Scotia, on Feb. 23. Sunwing Airlines will resume service to Toronto on Dec 21. And Locair will begin service to Marsh Harbor and Treasure City in the Bahamas on Dec. 18.
