Give blood
On All Hallow's Eve, where can a vampire get the most blood for his buck? At Florida Blood Services, of course.
If you are a fan of red cells, platelets and plasma, if you feel the need to bleed, the ghouls and goblins of FBS have the sharpest spikes and are the best practitioners of the ancient art of bloodletting.
Bring your friends and family. Bring your worst enemies.
FBS will provide comfortable couches, snacks and refreshments.
This is no Halloween trick, but it will be a lifesaving treat for patients at 38 Tampa Bay hospitals.

Safer times
A recent letter from a Montana resident caught my eye and caused me to write. ("Child abductions" by Maureen Molina, Oct.22.)
When on my annual visits to my son, who lives in Helena, Mont., I have been amazed that young, unattended children freely and safely ride their bikes and trikes not only in front of their homes but up and down the street as well. Adults, when leaving home for the day, often feel no need to lock their doors.
There still are places in the USA where the above occurs. This is a testament to what used to be.

Lottery odds
I think the ad on TV from Florida Lottery XTRA is misleading. It says it "will increase your chances of winning." If you play the XTRA you just will multiply your non-jackpot winnings for $1 more per play, not your chances of winning.

Time-wasting nonsense
If all U.S. Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite has to do is waste time making up some nonsense about President Obama needing Congress' approval to accept the Nobel Peace Prize, her constituents apparently need to replace her next election with someone who has their faculties intact.
