Swimming: Berkeley Prep boys capture district title

TAMPA - Berkeley Prep's boys swimming team got the Jesuit monkey off its back earlier this season, defeating the Tigers in a dual meet for the first time in 11 years.

And after watching Jesuit hoist the district trophy for 10 consecutive years, Berkeley Prep finally got the chance to do it by claiming the Class 1A-District 7 title Thursday night, finishing 77 points ahead of second-place Tampa Prep. Jesuit moved up in classification and is now in Class 2A-District 8.

With their first district championship in 10 years, the Bucs partied like it was 1999, tossing Coach Kevin Rosepapa into the pool.

"We're definitely on an upswing, and it started last year," Rosepapa said.

Berkeley Prep won five events, including all three relays. Tampa Prep kept it close with a strong performance by Rasmus Skjaerpe, a winner in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke. The Terrapins eighth-grader was one of the few double winners.

Robinson freshman John Nolte was a two-time winner, in the 50 and 100 free.

Tampa Prep's girls built an early lead and held on for a 460-397 victory over Berkeley Prep. The Terrapins' young team won three of the events and finished second in seven.

Tampa Prep's individual winners were sophomores Rosalie Spada (200 free) and Emma Siewert (200 IM) and eighth-grader Carylyn Waite (100 breaststroke).

District winners automatically advance to the Nov. 7 1A-Region 3 meet.

CLASS 3A-DISTRICT 4 DIVING: Bloomingdale's Nick Wing-Holt won his second-consecutive district title Thursday with a score of 443.55. Wing-Holt bested his Bulls teammate Mitch Nelson, who was second with a 339.35 score.

The Mathers sisters from Newsome battled for the girls title. Brittany Mathers won with a score of 431.2. And under-the-weather Erin Mathers (302.95) was second.
