TAMPA - As the crowd started to clear at Jefferson High, first-year Steinbrenner volleyball coach Staci Elias took a moment to gaze upon the trophy in her arms.
"It's what we've worked for," she said smiling. "It was a goal we set when we opened the doors. This is the first title and the first banner in the gym."
Steinbrenner, which opened this fall, defeated No. 3 seed Lennard on Thursday, 25-7, 25-6, 25-8, to capture the Class 4A-District 9 volleyball title, the school's first championship of any kind.
The Warriors (22-4) will host the Class 4A-District 10 runner-up Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the 4A region quarterfinals. Lennard (7-9) will travel to play the 4A-10 champion.
Junior middle hitter Kristen Liguori led Steinbrenner with seven kills, while junior setter Sam Drane controlled the attack with 20 assists. Sophomore Cary Anne Bame added six aces and five digs.
"I think we can go as far as state (tournament) if we practice hard," Liguori said.
Steinbrenner went undefeated in district play to earn the top seed.
"We're not done yet," Elias said.
