Grocery prices
Last week Publix had a particular variety of tomato on sale. The Tribune published an article on the big drop in tomato prices and included that in a story that implied Publix was paying too little for produce, causing hardship on farmworkers.
Well, that week's ad has expired, and the price has returned to normal: $2.49 a pound. Other stuff is on sale instead.
Will the Trib run an article on how the price of tomatoes has soared over 67 percent in just one week? Bagged greens are buy one/get one free this week. Send out the troops!

Inspirational story
Thank you for the wonderful article, "His crowning accomplishment" (front page, Oct. 29).
What a great story about a very deserving young man, Sam Piazza. It shows the potential of those with Down syndrome when given a chance.
It makes me very proud of the students at Gaither High to honor this young man and to treat him as any other student. I wish we could see more stories on the front page like this. Again, thanks.

Union negotiations
I read with interest about the economic pressures on Mayor Pam Iorio in negotiating with the police and firemen's unions.
I would suggest that maybe two, three or more of the high-ranking union officials take a flight to Flint, Mich., and drive around.
They could see huge empty lots where once stood the manufacturing plants of Chevrolet, Buick, A.C. Spark Plug, Saginaw Steering and others that are mere facets of memory.
Why are they gone? Perhaps demands were made and granted that rendered the companies unable to pay these same demands and still compete in a competitive open market.
There comes a point where we should say this to these people: "This is what we can afford to pay, and if you don't want to work for these wages, then step to the side, as the fellow behind you would love the job."
