Police officer, gunman exchange fire; no one hit

CLEARWATER - No one was hit during a shootout Saturday night on the Pinellas Trail near Eldridge Street, Clearwater police said.
Officers responding to shots being fired on the trail at 9:43 p.m. found a person matching the description of the shooter and tried to stop him.
As one officer approached, police said, the suspect began firing at him. The officer returned fire and several shots were exchanged. Neither the officer nor the suspect was injured.
Additional police officers converged on the area and arrested the suspect near the 700 block of Maple Street at 9:54 p.m.
Police have yet to identify either the officer or suspect.
