BERKELEY PREP BUCCANEERS
STADIUM: Newman Stadium, 4811 Kelly Road, Tampa
CLASS-DISTRICT: 1A-6
COACH: Dominick Ciao (143-69, 20th season overall; 11-9, third season at Berkeley Prep)
ON OFFENSE: The Bucs must replace their top offensive threat from 2008 – running back Julian Crockett, who graduated – but the team does have some significant players returning, led by sophomore quarterback Destin Nichols.
Ciao is expecting a big leap in production from his young quarterback, who passed for 642 yards and nine touchdowns in 2008, his first season as a starter.
One person to keep an eye on is sophomore Nelson Agholor, a versatile athlete who will see time at both running back and receiver. The offensive line returns three-year starter David Turkel.
ON DEFENSE: The Bucs defense returns some very productive players from 2008. Defensive linemen Tyler Davis, who led the Bucs with five sacks in 2008, is back to anchor the line, while linebacker Mark Timmel, a three-year starter, is back to control the middle of the unit. The secondary has its leader back, too, in Byrne Marston.
Other 1B-6 teams: Clearwater Central Catholic, Fort Meade, Indian Rocks Christian and Lakeland Christian.
CAMBRIDGE CHRISTIAN LANCERS
STADIUM: Home games are at Jefferson High (4401 W. Cypress St., Tampa)
CLASS-DISTRICT: 1B-5
COACH: Bob Dare (0-0, first year at Cambridge Christian)
ON OFFENSE: "I like out quarterback and, just because he's a sophomore, he can play,'' Dare said. "We really have two quarterbacks who can ply but I think Hayden Kelly is going to have a great season. We have Chris Brown at running back and a great receiver in Damarcus Fasion, so we have a lot to show. If our offensive line matures we can win some games.
"We're young on offense but we have chances to do some great things,'' said Dare, who is planning to run a shotgun offense.
ON DEFENSE: "We aren't sure right now what we are going to do,'' Dare said. "All I know is we will run a five-man front and we'll be aggressive. We have some questions, but we are comfortable. We'll see what happens.''
Other 1B-5 teams: Admiral Farragut, Calvary Christian, Keswick Christian, Lakeland Santa Fe Catholic, Lake Wales Vanguard and Lakeland Victory Christian.
