Job: Editorial writer/op-ed editor
Age: 49
Years at the Tribune: 22
Education: B.A. in English, concentrating in writing, and minor in journalism from East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C.
Hometown: Farmville, in the proud Tar Heel state of North Carolina.
Married: To Jill Bednash Yelverton, the greatest cook in the world, for 21 wonderful years.
Children: Emily and Ryan, both 20.
Pets: Cinnamon, Peaches, Flash, Zip and Maggie, American quarterhorses; Jack, an Irish Setter; and Miss Kitty and Chico, cats.
Favorite editorial topics: growth management, the environment, legal affairs, politics and the business of professional and collegiate sports.
How I became an editorial writer: Encouraged by a former colleague who told me I had a face for radio.
Books by the bedside: "Remote" by Sony.
Favorite getaway: The woods and natural springs of North Florida. Nothing like a dip in a 72-degree spring when it's approaching 100, or riding a horse without the fear of big trucks and ignorant, selfish motorists.
Best advice I could give a 20-year-old: Do not limit your formal education to a bachelor's degree; reacher higher – and get there. And get off the computer and get some fresh air occasionally.
Telephone number: 813-259-7427.
