TAMPA - A damaging verdict in a sexual harassment trial has not slowed County Commissioner Kevin White's drive for re-election.
On Monday, the Supervisor of Elections Office verified White had collected the necessary 1,454 signed petitions to qualify as a candidate for re-election. To be valid, the petitions had to be signed by registered voters in White's district.
The certification means White will not have to pay a $5,525 fee during the qualifying period in June. The election is in November 2010.
White's only announced opponent in the District 3 race, former state Sen. Les Miller, has not qualified.
White submitted the first batch of petitions on Aug. 24, three days after a jury found he had sexually harassed his former aide, Alyssa Ogden. He turned in the remaining petitions Friday, according to Tim Bridge, director of administration for the elections office.
Since the verdict, White has maintained a low profile and refused requests for comments.
