TAMPA - A 7-month-old baby was burned when his father accidentally spilled cooking oil on him late Wednesday night.
The father was cooking at Peppertree Lake Condos, 706 115th Ave. N., Apt. 2402, in St. Petersburg, about 11:30 p.m. when a pot of hot oil burst into flames, Deputy Fire Marshal Lt. Joel Granata said.
The 25-year-old grabbed the pot and ran toward the door, spilling oil on himself. In his rush, he tripped over the baby, spilling hot oil on the baby, Granata said.
The baby was taken to Tampa General Hospital as a trauma alert with burns covering 20 percent of his face, head and chest. The father suffered burns to his hands, arms and chest and was taken to Bayfront Medical Center, Granata said.
Firefighters kept the fire contained to the kitchen. The stove and cabinetry were damaged, Granata said.
Anytime there is an oil fire, Granata said, someone should turn off the burner and put a tight-fitting lid on the pot or slide a cookie sheet over it to smother the flames. Never try to move the pot from the stove as the flaming oil might spill, he added.
