TAMPA - Tampa International Airport will launch construction later this year on a $10.1 million project to expand the rental car facility at the main terminal by 15 percent to 20 percent and allow off-airport agencies Alamo and National to provide service from the terminal if they desire.
The project is expected to be completed by July, airport director Louis Miller said.
Six rental car companies operate from the main terminal, which patrons generally prefer to taking a shuttle off the airport property to pick up a rental car, Miller said.
At Thursday's monthly Hillsborough County Aviation Authority meeting, Miller reviewed 45 goals for the next fiscal year, including an effort to focus on maintaining the current level of international passengers and on Latin American and Caribbean opportunities.
In addition, airport staff will focus on charter planes serving Cuba if the government approves the airport's request to become a U.S. destination.
The Aviation Authority approved a fiscal 2009-10 budget of $168.8 million in revenue, a decline of 1.7 percent from this year, and $91.4 million in operating expenses, a 1.1 percent decline from the approved budget a year ago.
