The Bucs have cut ties with placekicker Matt Bryant.
Bryant missed the entire preseason with a hamstring strain in his kicking leg and has apparently lost his job to free agent challenger Mike Nugent.
The release comes as no surprise as the battle that was expected to be waged between Bryant and Nugent never came off.
Bryant's departure comes a after a season in which he ranked fourth in the NFL and set a Bucs franchise record with 131 points.
His career-best 32 field goals, meanwhile, were the second most in the NFL and tied for the most in franchise history.
At 27, though, Nugent is seven years younger than Bryant and he's said by scouts to have a stronger leg.
Nugent finished the preseason on Friday night by making both of his field goal tries and both his PATs.
For the preseason he was good on six of nine field goals, with the misses coming on tries of 50, 46 and 52 yards.
