TALLAHASSEE - Bald eagles are being spotted throughout Florida, weeks before the official start of the nesting season.
The state Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said Thursday it has received reports of the birds returning to nesting territories from Duval to Collier counties, although there are no reports of nesting activity. Nesting season starts Oct. 1.
Wildlife officials say nesting areas are surveyed each year to monitor activity and reproduction.
Bald eagles are protected from disturbance by the Florida Administrative Code, as well as two federal laws, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.
