RUSKIN - Chalk one up for Class 2A Lennard, which started its season with a victory against Class 5A Bloomingdale.
"Not bad for a little 2A school," Lennard coach George Edington said. "I think we just might end up being a pretty good football team."
On the game's first drive, Lennard went 70 yards in six plays for a touchdown, scoring on a 16-yard run by quarterback Fred Porter. After that, the game leveled out until the third quarter, when Lennard put together a 75-yard drive for another touchdown, this time scored by Tevin Abney on a 5-yard run.
With 10 minutes left in the game, Lennard all but put the game out of reach when Cory Berrien broke off a 51-yard run for the final Longhorns touchdown.
In the end, Abney (17 carries, 77 yards), Porter (eight carries, 73 yards) and Berrien (three carries, 59 yards), accounted for almost all of Lennard's rushing yards. Porter also completed five of 11 passes for 70 yards.
