Sickles 14, Gaither 8

TAMPA - Running back Carey White had a 25-yard touchdown run, and quarterback John Melvin Hendrick added a 13-yard TD run to rally Sickles past Gaither in the season opener for both teams.

A 30-minute rain delay and wet ball was likely the cause of three fumbles by Sickles in the first quarter that were all recovered by Gaither. The first came on the opening kickoff in which the Cowboys recovered on the 12-yard line. Jamal Allen capitalized on the first play of the drive with a 12-yard run.

Sickles fumbled on its next two drives but Gaither failed to put points on the board from these opportunities.

Sickles found its running game to be profitable with the help of White, who powered a seven-play, 75-yard drive, capped by White's 25-yard score.

On the Gryphons' ensuing drive, and with the help of two Gaither penalties, Hendrick ran 13 yards for a score to help put his team ahead 14-6.

Gaither took control of the second half with the help of freshman QB Shug Oyegnule. Gaither had the opportunity to score once more when Oyegnule launched a 26-yard pass to Allen, who caught the ball over two defenders, putting the Cowboys on the 31-yard line. They got to the 2 and on fourth-and-6 were swarmed by a host of Gryphon defenders.
