A wife and husband were arrested Monday on charges their five children were living under deplorable conditions.

Lisa Schohl, 34, and Steven Schohl Sr., 49, both of 12711 119th St., Largo, were each charged with five counts of child neglect, and each was being held at the Pinellas County Jail on $25,000 bail.

The Schohls have three boys and two girls, ages 5 to 13, Pinellas sheriff's spokeswoman Cecilia Barreda said.

Among the first things a deputy saw when arriving at their abode was a dryer on a sidewalk near the front door, Barreda said. There were no screens in the windows, and sheets were hanging from the top of the windows, apparently to prevent anyone from seeing inside, Barreda said.

The couch inside was infested with cockroaches, and there were cockroaches, flies and spiders throughout the home, she said. There was also a 5-foot-tall mound of garbage in the kitchen, Barreda said. The bathroom was soaked in water, apparently because of a leaking tub, she said.

The deputy wrote that the house smelled like a Dumpster on a hot summer day, she said.

The children had bug bites and heat rash, affidavits say.

Neither of the Schohls is employed. They have been investigated by social service agencies at least four times.
