DADE CITY - One-way bus fares will rise to $1.50 when Pasco County's new budget kicks in Oct. 1.
County commissioners raised the fares from $1 on Tuesday to help keep the system largely intact for one more year. By raising rates, commissioners avoided scrapping service in Zephyrhills, cutting service on Saturdays and extending wait times along U.S. 19 in west Pasco.
The fare increase puts more of the burden of running the Pasco County Public Transportation system on the shoulders of riders.
The increase will generate nearly $50,000, meaning the county will have to kick in a little more than $170,000 to keep bus service as is.
Commissioners raised fares after hearing from riders on both sides of the county who said they'd rather pay more than lose the service. However, bus officials say they expect ridership to fall with the rate increase.
