DADE CITY - Officials learned this week that the city likely will receive $1.2 million in federal stimulus funds for water system improvements.
They applied for $2.4 million this summer to pay for a new well and pumping station to improve water pressure and increase the supply of drinking water in the southern and western portions of Dade City.
The city divided the project into two phases.
"At first, we didn't think we were going to get funded at all," City Manager Billy Poe said. "They then told us we would get funded for the first phase."
Consultant Victor Cook said the project meets the criteria for stimulus funding because it is "shovel ready."
The project is designed and has permit approval, but it has been on the shelf for three years because the city couldn't pay for it.
The grant pays for 85 percent of the project costs.
