DENVER - Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. has agreed to give workers for one of its Florida suppliers an extra penny a pound for tomatoes harvested, or a 64 percent increase.
Chipotle spokesman Chris Arnold would not disclose the projected annual cost of the agreement to the Denver-based chain.
He said the deal represents a relatively small percentage of Chipotle's tomato purchases in the United States.
The deal announced Wednesday is with East Coast Farms.
It came after months of discussions with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, which has campaigned for better wages for Florida farmworkers.
Chipotle, which also has worked to increase purchases of naturally raised meat and local or organic produce, has some of the highest food costs among its peers.
