WHARTON...27 CHAMBERLAIN...13
TAMPA - Senior running back Shane McEwen, who missed last week's season opener with an ankle sprain, rushed 27 times for 117 yards and one touchdown to lead the visiting Wildcats to a win at John Adcock Stadium on Friday.
Wharton (1-1) wasted little time getting on the board, as junior quarterback Ryan Hatter capped the Wildcats' opening drive with a 1-yard sneak at the 4:38 mark of the first quarter. The 14-play, 72-yard scoring drive took 7:22 off the clock.
Wharton made it 13-0 two minutes later when Basim Saed scooped up a blocked punt and ran it in from 12 yards.
Chamberlain (0-2) cut it to 13-7 when running back Roger Madrazo ran in from 2 yards, but Hatter's second 1-yard sneak of the game upped the Wildcats' lead to 20-7 with 13 seconds remaining before half.
On the final play of the first half, Chiefs quarterback Travis Hanchett hit receiver William Whiteside (three catches, 111 yards) with a 65-yard scoring pass to make it 20-13.
Because of bad weather, the game was delayed 10 minutes at the start and again late in the first quarter, for an hour and 16 minutes.
