VALRICO - East Bay (2-0) sputtered to start the second half as the Indians' offense had only a three-and-out series through the first 16 minutes of the game's final two quarters. With a 14-7 lead at the half, East Bay watched as Bloomingdale (0-2) put together a 11/2-minute, 19-play, 88-yard, game-tying drive capped by a 4-yard Chris Herald touchdown run.
A drive, East Bay coach Brian Thornton admitted, he thought would take the game to overtime.
"When somebody does that to you," Thornton said. "When they drive 90 yards and tie the game, you usually lose the game in overtime."
However, the Indians rallied late, sparked by three solid rushes and one 13-yard reception by a cramping DJ Richmond that set up a Forrest Meredith 26-yard field goal, giving the Indians the win with four seconds left in the game.
"Our team has a whole lot of heart," Thornton said. "I may have coached better teams, but these guys have a lot of heart and believe in us."
The Bulls opened the scoring on a 9-yard run by Derrick Johnson.
