TAMPA - The city wants to spend $150,000 to study whether it would benefit from a partnership with Hillsborough County to buy a new computer software system.
Mayor Pam Iorio told city council members Tuesday that purchasing the computer system jointly would save both Tampa and the county millions of dollars in the long-run and modernize the city's handling of payroll, accounting, human resources and other municipal functions. The county has already done a feasibility study on the proposal.
"We've got to get to the 21st century," Iorio said. "Other cities are well ahead of us."
The new software would cost more than $20 million, with the county paying about two-thirds of the price, according to James Buckner, the city's chief information officer.
Buckner said the new software could save the city more than $3 million a year in administrative costs alone and would likely pay for itself in about three years.
To date, no money has been budgeted for the software purchase.
