PLANT CITY - Students at Wilson Elementary School are enjoying new footballs, basketballs and other sporting equipment this year thanks to the generosity of a local club.
The Plant City Ladies of the Elks recently presented Wilson physical education coach Robert Semago with a treasure trove of athletic gear: Four basketballs, four volleyballs, four soccer balls, four footballs, four Hula Hoops, four kick balls, sidewalk chalk and sports cones.
The club reached out to Wilson after a similar project last year at Jackson Elementary, also in Plant City. A club member who volunteered there noticed that Jackson's sports equipment was in poor shape. The club donated enough sporting goods for the school of more than 500 students.
Ladies of the Elks member Sharon Hammersla contacted Semago and learned that Wilson, a school of more than 300 students, could use some help.
Those on hand for the delivery and presentation included Hammersla, fellow club member Dee Spivey, Elks Lodge No. 1727 member Bill Spivey and Hammersla's grandson, 11-year-old Zachary Mitchell, a fifth-grader at Jackson Elementary.
Many of the Plant City Elks Lodge members attended Wilson, one of the oldest elementary schools in Plant City, Hammersla said. .
Wilson's sports equipment was years old and needed replacement, Hammersla said. The Ladies of the Elks members used money from their charitable fundraising projects to buy the new equipment.
Members of the Elks Lodge and Ladies of the Elks frequently volunteer in the community and are always looking for ways to help out, Hammersla added.
