ST. PETERSBURG - A fire broke out in an unoccupied house this morning in south St. Petersburg, but it was brought under control in about 10 minutes, and much of the residence was salvaged, St. Petersburg fire officials say.
Firefighters found the roof on fire at 981 Ninth Ave. S. at about 6:40 a.m., said Lt. Joel Granata, spokesman for St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue. Later they would discover that only the roof was on
fire, with the interior of the house unscathed.
The blaze caused an estimated $5,000 in damage to the 1,090-square-foot structure, Granata said.
The house has an estimated fair market value of $137,000.
The cause has not been determined, but the fire does not appear to be suspicious, Granata said.
