GAITHER...15 WHARTON...14
TAMPA - Sophomore running back Chadd Pierson scored from 10 yards out on the Cowboys' first play of overtime and senior kicker Shane Davis booted the decisive extra point to lead visiting Gaither to a win at Mitchell D. Muley Stadium on Thursday.
"It wasn't pretty offensively, but it is a win," Cowboys coach Mark Kantor said. "We needed this. You have to give credit to both teams. We always play games like this. We're mirror images of each other."
Wharton (1-2) went on offense first in overtime and scored on its first play when Ryan Hatter hit Xavier Fisher with a 10-yard pass in the back right corner of the end zone to make it 14-8. Gaither silenced the Wildcats' celebration when it blocked the extra-point.
Wharton sent the game into overtime when Shane McEwen ran in from 1 yard with 3:23 left in the fourth and Hatter hooked up with Marvin Murray for the 2-point conversion.
Gaither (1-1) went up 8-0 when sophomore linebacker Levon Brookings intercepted a pass and returned it 25 yards for the score 1:40 before halftime. Quarterback Zach Condon hit Josh Scarberry for the 2-point conversion.
In the first half, Gaither had 18 yards and Wharton had 97.
