SPOTO...42 EAST BAY...0
RIVERVIEW - Jamar Burns rushed 10 times for 191 yards, two touchdowns and a 2-point conversion to lead Spoto past East Bay on Thursday night.
Burns' longest run, and easily the most telling of the night, was a 74-yarder in the third quarter that included faking, juking and sprinting past six East Bay defenders, only a couple of whom were able to lay a hand on him.
"After looking at the tapes (of East Bay's victories vs. Plant City and Bloomingdale) we felt we could make some things happen with our speed," Spoto coach Dale Caparaso said. "Some of our guys can turn a 5-yard pass into a long gain real quick."
In the opening quarter it appeared East Bay (2-1) might make it interesting, holding Spoto (3-0) to only 5 yards on its first two drives. On the last play of the first quarter, however, the Spartans struck with a 52-yard completion to Tyrone Baker, who was tackled at the Indians' 1-yard line. Spoto quarterback James Brown punched it in one play later and the Spartan avalanche started rolling.
In the end, Spoto used three quarterbacks - Brown, Burns and Dominick Addison - who combined to go 7-for-12 through the air for 183 yards.
