TAMPA - Curtis Stokes, president of the Hillsborough County chapter of the NAACP, has resigned.
Stokes, 40, said Saturday that he stepped down from the post he has held since June 2005 to meet the needs of his family.
Stokes has led the local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People through a variety of changes over the years, from recruiting younger members to developing an Internet site.
Stokes said changes in his wife's work schedule as a pharmacist mean he needs to be home in the afternoons and evenings to care for the couple's 11-year-old son. The new schedule will prevent Stokes from making the group's evening meetings.
Stokes said he will remain on the group's executive committee.
"I had a good time as president of the NAACP," Stokes said.
