From opening day it appeared as if the Tampa Bay Rays were, in fact, suffering from a "hangover" after their incredible 2008 season. The team has a blase feel and lacks passion. Additionally, the front office made questionable player moves during the off-season that did not improve the roster.
A new ballpark is certainly a serious need; however, your suggestion to realign the divisions so the Rays can play in the weaker Central division is not the answer ("Rays' letdown requires big review," Our Opinion, Sept. 19).
The Rays proved last year they can play with the "big boys," and ownership has to be delighted with the competition level in the East, as well as the tremendous rivalries and attendance bump when New York, Boston and other East division teams come to town. Geographically, it makes sense for the Rays to be in the division as well.
The East is baseball's elite, and to be a part of it only makes the Rays better. Look what they did last year. They went to the World Series and made the Yankees spend a wheelbarrow full of cash!
