LITHIA - Newsome High's top two golfers started the season as newcomers to the Wolves program. However, freshmen Colin Julian and Brian Allen have showed youth has nothing to do with success.
Julian and Allen have paced the Wolves, as the team has started the season 4-0 with wins against Armwood, Freedom, Bloomingdale and King.
Julian opened the season Sept. 8 with a 35 against rival Bloomingdale, and Allen came in with a 38. Coach Jim Govreau said there doesn't seem to be much competition between the two.
"Everyone else is so worried about their scores and they are more worried about playing well," he said.
Govreau said Allen and Julian have a focus on the course well beyond their years.
"They don't seem to be coming off going, 'You got this and I got that,'" Govreau said. They "act like adults out on the course which is very strange for freshmen."
Govreau said each player has different strengths, pointing to Allen's consistency and Julian's ability to make big shots when needed. He also said both players were still progressing off of the tee, but had impressive short games and were strong putters.
"Colin has shot more birdies," Govreau said. "But Brian will go out there and kill you with pars; he'll par you to death."
He said his young up-and-comers' drives will develop, and hopefully they will bring success to the Wolves for the next four years.
"We only have a few seniors," Govreau said. "So it's really nice having two freshmen. Especially ones this level headed and committed to the game."
