Fears nanny state

I read with interest the article, "Debit card overdrafts a boon for banks," (Sept. 20). Isn't a debit card overdraft the same as a bounced check?
The gist of the article was that overdraft charges are unfair to consumers. There was no plea for personal responsibility or accountability, only a plea for more government oversight and regulation. Aren't we responsible for our own actions, for knowing our account balances?
Perhaps our government will soon be changing diapers and blowing noses. Self-reliance, wherefore art thou?
