TAMPA - The Sickles girls swim team was one point better than Berkeley Prep on Tuesday night. The Gryphons defeated the Bucs 93-92, while the Berkeley Prep boys easily defeated Sickles, 125-58.
Sickles' girls won all but three events, with Berkeley winning three of the final four.
The Gryphons got multiple victories from Katie Cook (50 and 100 freestyle) and Katie Westbrook (200 and 500 free), and a close win by Cristina DeCisneros in the 100 butterfly as she edged Berkeley senior Laura Jordan by eight-tenths of a second.
"Yes, this is a big boost for our girls," Sickles coach Fay Went said. "We changed the lineup a little bit and some of our girls are really coming along. This will be our toughest test until we get to Western Conference and districts."
Berkeley Prep's boys won nine of the 12 events, including all three relays. Multiple winners were Will Miller (200 free and 100 backstroke), Andreas Hatoum (200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke) and Sam Bobo (diving and 100 fly). Trey Went III was a two-time winner for Sickles, finishing first in the 50 and 500 free.
