ST. PETERSBURG - More than 200 volunteers packed into Fort DeSoto County Park Saturday to remove 880 pounds of discarded trash and debris.
The effort was part of the 24th annual International Coastal Cleanup, sponsored by the Ocean Conservancy.
For the local effort, Tampa Bay Watch took the lead, getting volunteers signed up for the global initiative.
Following the cleanup, Aquarius Spring!, a division of Coca-Cola, recognized Tampa Bay Watch with a $50,000 grant to support its clean water initiatives, said Coke representative Jodi Petrich.
The partnership and grant were celebrated by staff and volunteers during an informal luncheon, with volunteers being joined by Pinellas County Commissioner Susan Latvala, St. Petersburg City Councilman Jim Kennedy and State Rep. Bill Heller.
